Pediatric Cardiology
The field of pediatric cardiology is responsible for cardiac health in children. The pediatric cardiologist treats congenital malformations (whether structural or genetic), cardiomyopathy and conduction disorders, as well as acquired heart disease such as Kawasaki disease, myocarditis, etc.
The incidence of congenital heart defects, of various levels of severity, is approximately 8-10 per 1,000 births, to which a number of other abnormalities of much higher incidence is added (bicuspid aortic valve, PFO, etc.).
In most cases, children are brought for diagnosis as a result of heart murmurs. Murmurs are a symptom, a kind of noise that can be heard in the heart area of the chest that may indicate the presence of a heart defect.
In 80% of children, we can hear a heart murmur at some time during childhood, but this does not necessarily indicate a cardiac problem. In many cases, however, the findings will require further investigation.
